1st. Lt. Eugene D. “Gene” Potucek

Eugene D. Potucek (June,1940) paid the ultimate price in defense of his country in World War II.

He was a pilot in the 743rd Bombardment Squadron and had nearly completed his twenty-five missions when his plane sustained damage from enemy fire near Budapest, Hungary. Gene unselfishly stayed at the controls of his plane enabling his crew to parachute to safety. He was unable to escape and thus sacrificed himself for his crew members.

His wife was notified that he was killed in action on July 27, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Air Medal and the European Theatre Medal with campaign stars.

He is buried with other American heroes in theĀ Lorraine American Cemetery, Avenue de Fayetteville| 57500, Saint-Avold, France.
